LawyerAccredited Specialist Lawyer for Criminal Law

For years, Stephan Beukelmann (born in 1973) has been a recognized expert in the field of commercial and tax criminal law, defending and representing both individuals and companies. One core area of his expertise is consulting in complex and critical commercial and tax criminal situations in which – in addition to analyzing the past – complex compliance measures are required for the future.

Such nebulous and unclear circumstances require an experienced consultant, as well as partners in civil, administrative, and tax law. Stephan has a large network from which he is quickly able to source the specialists required for each individual case and to develop and coordinate a tailor-made defense strategy.

Stephan is co-editor of the Munich Attorney’s Handbook “Defense in Commercial and Tax Criminal Matters” (Publisher CH Beck), co-editor of “Compliance aktuell” (Published by CF Müller), co-editor of the magazine “StrafverteidigerForum (StraFo)”, as well as a permanent author of the criminal law section in the NJW- Spezial. He also comments on the regulations on fraud and insolvency offenses in Beck’s online commentary on the Penal Code, as well as the regulations on breach of trust and social security fraud in the Nomos commentary on the complete penal code.

Stephan studied law from 1992 to 1996 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich. There, he worked from 1994 to 2000 at the chair of Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Klaus Volk, professor for Criminal Law, Business Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure Law.
He received his Ph.D. in 2000 and was admitted to the Bar in 2001. He became a specialist in criminal law in 2004. Stephan was a partner in the law firm Lohberger & Leipold from 2005 to 2020. He is a member of the executive committee of the Criminal Law Working Group of the German Lawyers’ Association and a training officer on the subject of “Compliance from a criminal law perspective”.
Stephan has been listed in professional rankings for many years, including the JUVE HANDBUCH Wirtschafts-Kanzleien 2023/2024 (“strategic and Teamplayer”) as well as in the JUVE Handbook Taxes 2023 (“absolute discreet”). According to WirtschaftsWoche, he is one of the top lawyers 2024 for Commercial Criminal Law, according to HANDELSBLATT / BEST LAWYERS one of Germany’s best lawyers 2023 in Commercial Ciminal Law, Criminal Tax Law and Tax law and according to FOCUS one of Germany’s top lawyers 2023 in criminal law.

Stephan is also internationally recognized: According to Chambers & Partners 2023, he is frequently recommended (“has substantial expertise as defence counsel in corporate, commercial and tax criminal law cases. He is active on prominent domestic and international mandates“) and is listed in the manual “Who’s Who Legal Business Crime Defense 2023” in the categories “Corporates” and “Individuals”. According to “Who’s Who Legal” he belongs to the „Thought Leaders Global Elite 2024“ in the category „Business Crime Defence – Individuals“ and to the „Thought Leaders“ in the category „Business Crime Defence 2023“.  Stephan is also listed by The Legal500 (“a reliable competitor, strategically and professionally“, „characterized by strong analytical and strategic thinking”).
